The purpose of a liberal arts education is to give students the chance to consider different ways of living. But you can't do that if you don't have a way to enter into those lives. This is where the Great Books come in. They are not monuments to the past; they are provocations.

The real question we should ask when we read a great novel or a poem is not 'What does this mean?' but 'Can I live this way?' or 'Does this book tell the truth about my life?' Most of us live our lives in a sort of sleep. We do what our parents did; we do what our friends are doing; we follow the scripts that, television and social media write for us. We are often 'used' by the language and ideas of our time without even knowing it. Reading-real reading-is the process of waking up. It is the process of finding a language that is more accurate, more powerful, and more honest than the one we were handed at birth.

When you encounter a character in a novel who feels what you feel, but describes it in a way you never could, something transformative happens. You are no longer alone in your head. You have found a 'second self in the author. This is what I call 'secular yuv) revelation.' It is the moment when a book stops being an object on a shelf and starts

being a part of your internal GPS.

We read to become more than we are. If you only read what is easy, or what reinforces what you already believe, you are simply looking in a mirror. But when you read a book that challenges your core assumptions-that makes you rethink what it means to be brave, or what it means to be successful-you are adding a new dimension to your soul.

The best books provide us with a 'vocabulary of desire.' They help us name what we actually want, rather than what we are told to want. In a world that is constantly trying to turn you into a predictable consumer, reading is an act of rebellion. It is the most effective way to protect your individuality and to build a life that is actually your own.

The purpose of a liberal arts education is to give students the chance to consider different ways of living.

But you can't do that if you don't have a way to enter into those lives.

This is where the Great Books come in.

They are not monuments to the past; they are provocations.

The real question we should ask when we read a great novel or a poem is not “What does this mean?” but “Can I live this way?” or “Does this book tell the truth about my life?”

Most of us live our lives in a sort of sleep.

We do what our parents did; we do what our friends are doing; we follow the scripts that television and social media write for us.

We are often “used” by the language and ideas of our time without even knowing it.

Readingreal readingis the process of waking up.

It is the process of finding a language that is more accurate, more powerful, and more honest than the one we were handed at birth.

When you encounter a character in a novel who feels what you feel, but describes it in a way you never could, something transformative happens.

You are no longer alone in your head.

You have found a “second self” in the author.

This is what I call “secular revelation.”

It is the moment when a book stops being an object on a shelf and starts being a part of your internal GPS.

We read to become more than we are.

If you only read what is easy, or what reinforces what you already believe, you are simply looking in a mirror.

But when you read a book that challenges your core assumptions, you are adding a new dimension to your soul.

The best books provide us with a “vocabulary of desire.”

They help us name what we actually want, rather than what we are told to want.

Reading is an act of rebellion.

It is the most effective way to protect your individuality and to build a life that is actually your own.

2. Read the passage about 'The Unethical Aspects of Plagiarism and Use of Generative Al'.

The "big three" offences of scientific misconduct are often regarded as fabrication, falsification and plagiarism, with the latter being perhaps its most famous form. Everyone knows what plagiarism is, but what exactly is wrong with it?

First, plagiarism is theft. It constitutes stealing someone's work and using it for one's own ends. Second, plagiarism involves deception: the plagiarist passes someone else's work off as their own. Thus, plagiarism constitutes an offence not only against the person whose work is appropirated, but also against the person reading the work, who is deceived. Third, of course, plagiarism tends to be contrary to university regulations, so it also constitutes formal rule-breaking.

Clearly, using ChatGPT or similar tools to generate an essay bears strong resemblance to traditional plagiarism. It involves deception, in the sarne way; it breaks rules in the same way. However, the key distinction between plagiarism and "CheatGPT" is that the latter does not involve any theft. While it might seem obvious, this is an important distinction. Many students will not even consider plagiarism because they know it is wrong to deceive course tutors, and wrong to break course rules. Some might consider cheating, but hesitate becuase it involves stealing from someone else, whether another student or some other author.

But cheating using ChatGPT does not require stealing from anybody. Quite the opposite: student are presented with a tool that is designed and 'wants' to be used to generate text. No theft is required; just make a request and receive your essay. Of course, it might be aruged that anyone who is happy to cheat will also be happy to steal, but the fact that it involves wronging another person might be decisive for some students. (One caveat here is that ChatGPT, being trained on large language models, may itself reuse text that is in the public domain, and so may include some plagiarised text as a 'bonus').

Third, plagiarism is contrary to university regulations.

Using ChatGPT bears strong resemblance to traditional plagiarism.

However, the key distinction is that it does not involve theft.

Students may hesitate because plagiarism involves stealing.

ChatGPT does not require stealing.

Students can simply request and receive an essay.
