Why I Didn't Sit with August the First Day of School
내가 학교 첫날 어거스트와 함께 앉지 않았던 이유
Okay, I'm a total hypocrite. I know.
그래, 나는 완전한 위선자다. 나도 안다.
That very first day of school I remember seeing August in the cafeteria.
학교 첫날, 나는 식당에서 어거스트를 봤던 게 기억난다.
Everybody was looking at him.
모두가 그를 쳐다보고 있었다.
Talking about him.

Back then, no one was used to his face or even knew that he was coming to Beecher, so it was a total shocker for a lot of
people to see him there on the first day of school.

Most kids were even afraid to get near him.

So when I saw him going into the cafeteria ahead of me, I knew he'd have no one to sit with, but I just couldn't bring myself to sit with him.

I had been hanging out with him all morning long because we had so many classes together, and I guess I was just kind
of wanting a little normal time to chill with other kids.

I sat down with Isaiah and Luca even though I'd never met them before, and we talked about baseball the whole time,

They became my lunch table from then on.

I heard Summer had sat down with August, which surprised me

I filled them in about everything Charlotte had told me, except for the whole big part about my having "snapped" under the pressure of being Auggie's friend,

I guess all I really told them about was how Julian had had a holiday party and managed to turn the whole grade against me.

"It just feels so weird," I said,

Auggie started smiling.

“So here are the official sides,” said Summer at lunch the next day.

She pulled out a folded piece of loose-leaf paper and opened it.

"Where did you get this?" said Auggie, looking over my shoulder as I read the list.

"Great. The nerds are on my side."

"I think Charlotte likes you, by the way."
“그런데 말이야, 샬럿이 너 좋아하는 것 같아.”
"Yeah, I know."
“응, 나도 알아.”
"Are you going to ask her out?"
“그럼 데이트 신청할 거야?”
"Are you kidding? I can't, now that everybody's acting like I have the Plague."
“농담이야? 지금 다들 내가 전염병이라도 걸린 것처럼 구는데 어떻게 해.”
The second I said it, I realized I shouldn't have said it.
그 말을 하자마자, 내가 그 말을 하면 안 됐다는 걸 깨달았다.
There was this awkward moment of silence.
어색한 침묵이 흘렀다.
I looked at Auggie.
나는 어기를 바라봤다.
"It's okay," he said. "I knew about that."
“괜찮아.” 그가 말했다. “나도 그거 알고 있었어.”
"Sorry, dude," I said.
“미안해, 친구.”라고 내가 말했다.
"I didn't know they called it the Plague, though," he said.
“그래도 그걸 전염병이라고 부르는 줄은 몰랐네.”라고 그가 말했다.
"I figured it was more like the Cheese Touch or something."
“치즈 터치 같은 거일 줄 알았지.”
"Oh, yeah, like in Diary of a Wimpy Kid." I nodded.
“아, 맞아. 「윔피 키드 일기」에 나오는 것처럼.” 나는 고개를 끄덕였다.
"The Plague actually sounds cooler," he joked.
“전염병이란 말이 오히려 더 멋있게 들리네.”라고 그가 농담했다.
"Like someone could catch the 'black death of ugliness.'"
“마치 누군가가 ‘못생김의 흑사병’에 걸릴 수도 있을 것처럼 말이야.”
As he said this, he made air quotes.
그가 이 말을 하며 손으로 따옴표를 그렸다.
"I think it's awful," said Summer, but Auggie shrugged while taking a big sip from his juice box.
“난 정말 끔찍하다고 생각해.”라고 서머가 말했지만, 어기는 주스 상자를 크게 한 모금 마시며 어깨를 으쓱했다.
"Anyway, I'm not asking Charlotte out," I said.

"My mom thinks we're all too young to be dating anyway," she answered.
“우리 엄마는 어쨌든 우리가 데이트하기엔 너무 어리다고 생각해.”라고 그녀가 대답했다.
"What if Reid asked you out?" I said. "Would you go?"
“그럼 리드가 너한테 데이트 신청하면?” 내가 말했다. “나갈 거야?”
I could tell she was surprised.
나는 그녀가 놀랐다는 걸 알 수 있었다.
"No!" she said.
“아니!”라고 그녀가 말했다.
"I'm just asking," I laughed.
“그냥 물어본 거야.”라고 나는 웃었다.
She shook her head and smiled.

"Why? What do you know?"

"Nothing! I'm just asking!" I said.

"I actually agree with my mom," she said.

"I do think we're too young to be dating."
“우린 데이트하기엔 너무 어리다고 생각해.”
"I mean, I just don't see what the rush is."
“그러니까, 왜 그렇게 서두를 필요가 있는지 모르겠어.”
"Yeah, I agree," said August.
“응, 나도 동의해.”라고 어거스트가 말했다.
"Which is kind of a shame, you know, what with all those babes who keep throwing themselves at me and stuff?"
“계속 나한테 들이대는 수많은 미인들이 있는데도 말이야, 그건 좀 아쉽지 않나?”
He said this in such a funny way that the milk I was drinking came out my nose when I laughed,
그가 너무 웃기게 말하는 바람에, 내가 웃다가 마시던 우유가 코로 나와 버렸고,
which made us all totally crack up.
그 바람에 우리 모두 완전히 웃음이 터져 버렸다.
August's House
어거스트의 집
It was already the middle of January, and we still hadn't even chosen what science-fair project we were going to work on.
이미 1월 중순이었는데도 우리는 과학 전시회에서 할 프로젝트조차 아직 정하지 못하고 있었다.
I guess I kept putting it off because I just didn't want to do it.
아마도 내가 그냥 하고 싶지 않아서 계속 미뤄 두고 있었던 것 같다.
Finally, August was like, "Dude, we have to do this."
마침내 어거스트가 “야, 우리 이거 꼭 해야 돼.”라고 말했다.
So we went to his house after school.

I was really nervous because I didn't know if August had ever told his parents about what we now called the Halloween
Incident.

Turns out the dad wasn't even home and the mom was out running errands.

She was super cool and friendly toward me.

When I first walked into Auggie's room, I was like, "Whoa, Auggie, you have got a serious Star Wars addiction."

He had ledges full of Star Wars miniatures, and a huge The Empire Strikes Back poster on his wall.

"I know, right?" he laughed.
“그치?” 그가 웃었다.
He sat down on a rolling chair next to his desk and I plopped down on a beanbag chair in the corner.

That's when his dog waddled into the room right up to me.

"He was on your holiday card!" I said, letting the dog sniff my hand.

"She," he corrected me. "Daisy. You can pet her. She doesn't bite."
“암컷이야.” 그가 고쳐 말했다. “데이지야. 쓰다듬어도 돼. 안 물어.”
When I started petting her, she basically just rolled over onto her back.
내가 쓰다듬기 시작하자 그녀는 바로 배를 보이며 드러누웠다.
"She wants you to rub her tummy," said August.
“배 긁어 달라는 거야.”라고 어거스트가 말했다.
"Okay, this is the cutest dog I've ever seen," I said, rubbing her stomach.
“와, 내가 본 개 중에 제일 귀여워.” 나는 배를 문지르며 말했다.
"I know, right? She's the best dog in the world. Aren't you, girlie?"
“그치? 세상에서 제일 좋은 개야. 그렇지, 아가?”
As soon as she heard Auggie's voice say that, the dog started wagging her tail and went over to him.
어기의 목소리를 듣자마자 개는 꼬리를 흔들며 그에게 다가갔다.
"Who's my little girlie? Who's my little girlie?" Auggie was saying as she licked him all over the face.
“누가 내 작은 아가지? 누가?” 어기는 얼굴을 마구 핥는 개에게 그렇게 말하고 있었다.
"I wish I had a dog," I said. "My parents think our apartment's too small."
“나도 개 키우고 싶다.” 내가 말했다. “우리 부모님은 아파트가 너무 작다고 하셔.”
I started looking around at the stuff in his room while he turned on the computer.
그가 컴퓨터를 켜는 동안 나는 방 안을 둘러보기 시작했다.
"Hey, you've got an Xbox 360? Can we play?"
“야, 엑스박스 360 있네? 우리 게임해도 돼?”
"Dude, we're here to work on the science-fair project."

"Of course I have Halo."

He had logged on to the Beecher website and was now scrolling down Ms. Rubin's teacher page through the list of
science-fair projects.

"Can you see from there?" he said.

I sighed and went to sit on a little stool that was right next to him.

"Cool iMac," I said. "What kind of computer do you have?"

"Okay, how about this one?" he said, turning the screen in my direction so I would look.

I made a quick scan of the screen and my eyes literally started blurring.

"Making a sun clock," he said. "That sounds kind of cool."

I leaned back. "Can't we just make a volcano?"

"Everyone makes volcanoes."

"Duh, because it's easy," I said, petting Daisy again.

"What about: How to make crystal spikes out of Epsom salt?"
“그럼 엡솜 소금으로 결정 가시 만들기는 어때?”
"Sounds boring," I answered. "So why'd you call her Daisy?"
“지루해.” 내가 대답했다. “근데 왜 이름을 데이지로 지었어?”
He didn't look up from the screen.
그는 화면에서 눈을 떼지 않았다.
"My sister named her. I wanted to call her Darth."
“누나가 지었어. 난 다스로 부르고 싶었는데.”
"Actually, technically speaking, her full name is Darth Daisy, but we never really called her that."
“사실 정확히 말하면 본명은 다스 데이지인데, 그렇게 부르진 않아.”
"Darth Daisy! That's funny! Hi, Darth Daisy!"
“다스 데이지! 웃기다! 안녕, 다스 데이지!”
I said to the dog, who rolled onto her back again for me to rub her tummy.

"Okay, this one is the one," said August, pointing to a picture on the screen of a bunch of potatoes with wires poking out
of them.
“자, 이게 딱이다.” 어거스트가 감자에 전선이 꽂힌 사진을 가리키며 말했다.
"How to build an organic battery made of potatoes."
“감자로 만드는 유기 배터리.”
"Now, that's cool."

"It says here you could power a lamp with it."

"We could call it the Spud Lamp or something."

"What do you think?"

"Dude, that sounds way too hard."

"You know I suck at science."

"Shut up, you do not."

"Yeah I do! I got a fifty-four on my last test."
“아니야! 지난 시험에서 54점 받았어.”
"I suck at science!"
“나 과학 진짜 못해!”
"No you don't!"
“아니야!”
"And that was only because we were still fighting and I wasn't helping you."
“그건 우리가 싸우고 있어서 내가 도와주지 않았기 때문이야.”
"I can help you now."

"This is a good project, Jack."

"We've got to do it."

"Fine, whatever." I shrugged.

Just then there was a knock on the door.
그때 문을 두드리는 소리가 났다.
A teenage girl with long dark wavy hair poked her head inside the door.
길고 검은 웨이브 머리의 십대 소녀가 문 안으로 얼굴을 내밀었다.
She wasn't expecting to see me.
그녀는 나를 볼 줄 몰랐던 것 같았다.
"Oh, hey," she said to both of us.
“어, 안녕.” 그녀가 우리 둘에게 말했다.
"Hey, Via," said August, looking back at the computer screen.
“안녕, 비아.” 어거스트가 컴퓨터 화면을 보며 말했다.
"Via, this is Jack. Jack, that's Via."
“비아, 이쪽은 잭이야. 잭, 이쪽은 비아.”
"Hey," I said, nodding hello.
“안녕.” 나는 고개를 끄덕였다.
"Hey," she said, looking at me carefully.
“안녕.” 그녀는 나를 유심히 바라보며 말했다.
I knew the second Auggie said my name that he had told her about the stuff I had said about him.
어기가 내 이름을 말하자마자, 내가 그에 대해 했던 말을 그녀에게 이미 말해 줬다는 걸 알았다.
I could tell from the way she looked at me.
그녀가 나를 보는 눈빛에서 알 수 있었다.
In fact, the way she looked at me made me think she remembered me from that day at Carvel on Amesfort Avenue all
those years ago.
사실 그녀의 시선은 몇 년 전 에임스포트 애비뉴의 카벨에서 만났던 그날을 기억하고 있는 것처럼 느껴졌다.
"Auggie, I have a friend I want you to meet, okay?" she said.
“어기, 네가 만나야 할 친구가 있어.” 그녀가 말했다.
"He's coming over in a few minutes."
“몇 분 후에 올 거야.”
"Is he your new boyfriend?" August teased.
“새 남자친구야?” 어거스트가 놀렸다.
Via kicked the bottom of his chair.
비아는 그의 의자 밑을 발로 찼다.
"Just be nice," she said, and left the room.
“좀 착하게 굴어.” 그녀는 그렇게 말하고 방을 나갔다.
"Dude, your sister's hot," I said.
“야, 네 누나 완전 예쁘다.”
"I know."

"She hates me, right?"

"You told her about the Halloween Incident?"

"Yeah."

"Yeah, she hates me or yeah, you told her about Halloween?"

The Boyfriend

Two minutes later the sister came back with this guy named Justin.
2분 뒤, 누나는 저스틴이라는 남자와 함께 돌아왔다.
Seemed like a cool enough dude.
꽤 괜찮아 보이는 사람이었다.
Longish hair. Little round glasses.
조금 긴 머리에, 작고 둥근 안경을 쓰고 있었다.
He was carrying a big long shiny silver case that ended in a sharp point on one end.
그는 한쪽 끝이 뾰족한, 크고 길며 반짝이는 은색 케이스를 들고 있었다.
"Justin, this is my little brother, August," said Via. "And that's Jack."
“저스틴, 이쪽은 내 남동생 어거스트야.” 비아가 말했다. “그리고 저쪽은 잭이야.”
"Hey, guys," said Justin, shaking our hands.
“안녕, 얘들아.” 저스틴은 우리와 악수를 했다.
He seemed a little nervous.
그는 조금 긴장한 것처럼 보였다.
I guess maybe it was because he was meeting August for the first time.
아마 어거스트를 처음 만났기 때문인 것 같았다.
Sometimes I forget what a shock it is the first time you meet him.
가끔 나는 그를 처음 만났을 때 얼마나 충격적인지 잊고 지낸다.
"Cool room."
“방 멋지다.”
"Are you Via's boyfriend?" Auggie asked mischievously, and his sister pulled his cap down over his face.
“비아 남자친구야?” 어거스트가 장난스럽게 묻자, 누나는 그의 모자를 얼굴까지 푹 눌러 씌웠다.
"What's in your case?" I said. "A machine gun?"

"Ha!" answered the boyfriend.

"That's funny. No, it's a, uh . . . fiddle."

"Justin's a fiddler," said Via.
“저스틴은 바이올린 연주자야.” 비아가 말했다.
"He's in a zydeco band."
“자이데코 밴드에서 연주해.”
"What the heck is a zydeco band?" said Auggie, looking at me.
“자이데코 밴드가 도대체 뭐야?” 어거스트가 나를 보며 말했다.
"It's a type of music," said Justin. "Like Creole music."
“음악의 한 종류야.” 저스틴이 말했다. “크리올 음악 같은 거지.”
"What's Creole?" I said.
“크리올이 뭐야?” 내가 물었다.
"You should tell people that's a machine gun," said Auggie.
“사람들한테 기관총이라고 말하는 게 좋겠어.” 어거스트가 말했다.
"Nobody would ever mess with you."
“그러면 아무도 너한테 시비 못 걸 거야.”
"Ha, I guess you're right," Justin said, nodding and tucking his hair behind his ears.
“하, 네 말이 맞는 것 같네.” 저스틴은 고개를 끄덕이며 머리카락을 귀 뒤로 넘겼다.
"Creole's the kind of music they play in Louisiana," he said to me.
“크리올은 루이지애나에서 연주하는 음악 같은 거야.” 그가 나에게 말했다.
"Are you from Louisiana?" I asked.
“루이지애나 출신이에요?” 내가 물었다.
"No, um," he answered, pushing up his glasses.
“아니, 음…” 그는 안경을 고쳐 쓰며 대답했다.
"I'm from Brooklyn."
“난 브루클린에서 왔어.”
I don't know why this made me want to laugh.
왜인지는 모르겠지만 이 말이 웃기게 느껴졌다.
"Come on, Justin," said Via, pulling him by the hand.
“가자, 저스틴.” 비아가 그의 손을 잡아끌며 말했다.
"Let's go hang out in my room."
“내 방에서 좀 놀자.”
"Okay, see you guys later. Bye," he said.
“그래, 나중에 보자. 안녕.” 그가 말했다.
"Bye!"

"Bye!"
