I watched the rest of the play from the wings just offstage, next to Davenport.
나는 무대 가장자리, 댄버트 옆에서 나머지 연극을 지켜보았다.
Justin was amazing, and Via, in that heartbreaking last scene, was awesome.
저스틴은 정말 대단했고, 비아는 마지막 슬픈 장면에서 멋졌다.
There was one line she flubbed a bit, but Justin covered for her, and no one in the audience even noticed.
그녀가 한 대사를 조금 실수했지만, 저스틴이 대신해 주었고, 관객들은 전혀 눈치채지 못했다.
I heard Davenport muttering under his breath: "Good, good, good."
나는 댄버트가 중얼거리는 소리를 들었다. “좋아, 좋아, 좋아.”
He was more nervous than all of the students put together: the actors, the set decorators, the lighting team, the guy
handling the curtains.
그는 모든 학생들—배우들, 무대 장식 담당, 조명팀, 커튼 담당자—을 합친 것보다 더 긴장하고 있었다.
Davenport was a wreck, frankly.
솔직히 댄버트는 완전히 망가진 상태였다.
The only time I felt any regret, if you could even call it that, was at the end of the play when everyone went out for their
curtain calls.
내가 조금이나마 후회를 느낀 유일한 순간(그렇다고 부를 수 있을지 모르겠지만)은 연극 마지막, 모든 배우들이 커튼콜을 위해 무대
에 나갔을 때였다.
Via and Justin were the last of the actors walking out onstage, and the audience rose to their feet when they took their
bows.
비아와 저스틴은 마지막으로 무대에 등장했고, 그들이 인사할 때 관객들은 모두 일어섰다.
That, I admit, was a little bittersweet for me.
솔직히, 그 순간은 나에게 조금 씁쓸했다.
But just a few minutes later I saw Nate and Isabel and Auggie make their way backstage, and they all seemed so happy.
하지만 몇 분 후, 나는 네이트와 이사벨, 어기가 무대 뒤로 가는 것을 보았고, 모두 행복해 보였다.
Everyone was congratulating the actors, patting them on the back.
모두가 배우들을 축하하며 등을 두드려 주었다.
It was that crazy backstage theater mayhem where sweaty actors stand euphoric while people come worship them for a
few seconds.
땀에 젖은 배우들이 황홀한 상태로 서 있고, 사람들이 몇 초 동안 그들을 추켜세우는, 그 정신없는 무대 뒤 광경이었다.
In that crush of people, I noticed Auggie looking kind of lost.
그 사람들 틈에서 나는 어기가 조금 길을 잃은 듯한 모습을 발견했다.
I cut through the crowd as fast as I could and came up behind him.
나는 가능한 한 빨리 군중 사이를 뚫고 그 뒤로 다가갔다.
"Hey!" I said. "Major Tom!"
“이봐!” 나는 말했다. “메이저 톰!”
After the Show
공연 후
I can't say why I was so happy to see August again after so long, or how good it felt when he hugged me.
오랜만에 어거스트를 다시 보고 왜 그렇게 행복했는지, 그가 나를 안아줬을 때 얼마나 기분이 좋았는지 말할 수 없다.
"I can't believe how big you've gotten," I said to him.
“네가 이렇게 컸다니 믿을 수 없어,” 나는 그에게 말했다.
"I thought you were going to be in the play!" he said.
“연극에 나올 줄 알았어!” 그가 말했다.
"I wasn't up to it," I said. "But Via was great, don't you think?"
“할 기분이 아니었어,” 나는 말했다. “하지만 비아 정말 잘했지, 그치?”
He nodded. Two seconds later Isabel found us.
그는 고개를 끄덕였다. 2초 후 이사벨이 우리를 찾았다.
"Miranda!" she said happily, giving me a kiss on the cheek.
“미란다!” 그녀가 행복하게 말하며 내 뺨에 키스했다.
And then to August: "Don't ever disappear like that again."
그리고 어거스트에게 말했다. “다시는 그렇게 사라지지 마.”
"You're the one who disappeared," Auggie answered back.
“사라진 건 너잖아,” 어기가 대답했다.
"How are you feeling?" Isabel said to me. "Via told us you got sick. . . ."
“기분 어때?” 이사벨이 내게 말했다. “비아가 네가 아팠다고 했어…”
"Much better," I answered.
“훨씬 좋아,” 나는 대답했다.
"Is your mom here?" said Isabel.
“엄마는 여기 있어?” 이사벨이 물었다.
"No, she had work stuff, so it's actually not a big deal for me," I said truthfully.
“아니, 엄마는 일이 있어서, 나한텐 사실 큰 문제 아니야,” 나는 솔직하게 말했다.
"We have two more shows anyway, though I don't think I'll be as good an Emily as Via was tonight."
“어쨌든 공연이 두 번 더 남았는데, 오늘 밤 비아만큼 에밀리 역할을 잘할 수 있을 것 같진 않아.”
Nate came over and we had basically the same exact conversation.
네이트가 다가왔고, 우리는 사실상 똑같은 대화를 나눴다.
Then Isabel said: "Look, we're going to have a late-night dinner to celebrate the show. Are you feeling up to joining us?
We'd love to have you!"
그때 이사벨이 말했다. “있잖아, 우리 공연 축하로 늦은 저녁 먹으러 가는데, 같이 갈 기분이야? 우리랑 같이 가면 좋겠어!”
"Oh, no . . . ," I started to say.
“아, 아니야…” 나는 말하려고 했다.
"Pleeease?" said Auggie.
“제발?” 어기가 말했다.
"I should go home," I said.
“집에 가야 해,” 나는 말했다.
"We insist," said Nate.
“우린 꼭 같이 가길 원해,” 네이트가 말했다.
By now Via and Justin had come over with Justin's mom, and Via put her arm around me.
그때쯤 비아와 저스틴이 저스틴 엄마와 함께 다가왔고, 비아가 내 팔을 감쌌다.
"You're definitely coming," she said, smiling her old smile at me.
“너는 반드시 함께 가야 해,” 그녀가 예전 그 미소를 지으며 말했다.
They started leading me out of the crowd, and I have to admit, for the first time in a very, very long time, I felt absolutely
happy.
그들은 나를 군중 속에서 이끌기 시작했고, 솔직히 아주 오랜만에 나는 완전히 행복하다는 느낌을 받았다.
