The next day was just as great as the first day.
다음 날도 첫째 날만큼이나 즐거웠다.
We went horseback riding in the morning, and in the afternoon we rappelled up some ginormous trees with the help of the nature guides.
아침에는 승마를 했고, 오후에는 자연 가이드의 도움을 받아 거대한 나무들을 밧줄로 오르내렸다.
By the time we got back to the cabins for dinner, we were all really tired again.
저녁을 먹기 위해 캐빈으로 돌아왔을 때, 우리는 다시 모두 정말 피곤했다.
After dinner they told us we had an hour to rest, and then we were going to take a fifteen-minute bus ride to the
fairgrounds for an outdoor movie night.
저녁 후, 한 시간 동안 쉴 수 있다고 했고, 그 뒤에는 15분 정도 버스를 타고 박람회장으로 가 야외 영화 밤을 즐길 예정이었다.
I hadn't had the chance to write a letter to Mom and Dad and Via yet, so I wrote one telling them all about the stuff we
did that day and the day before.
아직 엄마, 아빠, 비아에게 편지를 쓸 기회가 없었기 때문에, 그날과 전날 우리가 했던 일들을 모두 알려주는 편지를 썼다.
I pictured myself reading it to them out loud when I got back, since there was just no way the letter would get home
before I did.
편지가 내가 돌아가기 전에 집에 도착할 리가 없으니, 돌아가서 소리 내어 읽는 모습을 상상했다.
When we got to the fairgrounds, the sun was just starting to set.
박람회장에 도착했을 때, 해가 막 지기 시작했다.
It was about seven-thirty.
시간은 약 7시 30분이었다.
The shadows were really long on the grass, and the clouds were pink and orange.
잔디 위 그림자는 길게 드리워져 있었고, 구름은 분홍색과 주황색이었다.
It looked like someone had taken sidewalk chalk and smudged the colors across the sky with their fingers.
마치 누군가가 분필로 하늘에 색을 칠하고 손가락으로 번진 것처럼 보였다.
It's not that I haven't seen nice sunsets before in the city, because I have—slivers of sunsets between buildings—but I
wasn't used to seeing so much sky in every direction.
도시에서 아름다운 석양을 본 적이 없는 건 아니다. 건물 사이로 보이는 조그만 석양들 말이다. 하지만 이렇게 사방으로 하늘이 넓게
보이는 것은 익숙하지 않았다.
Out here in the fairgrounds, I could understand why ancient people used to think the world was flat and the sky was a
dome that closed in on top of it.
이 넓은 박람회장에 있으니, 옛사람들이 세상이 평평하고 하늘이 꼭대기를 덮는 돔처럼 보인다고 생각했는지 이해가 갔다.
That's what it looked like from the fairgrounds, in the middle of this huge open field.
이 거대한 열린 들판 한가운데서 바라본 하늘이 바로 그런 모습이었다.
Because we were the first school to arrive, we got to run around the field all we wanted until the teachers told us it was
time to lay out our sleeping bags on the ground and get good viewing seats.
우리 학교가 가장 먼저 도착했기 때문에, 선생님이 이제 바닥에 침낭을 펴고 좋은 자리를 잡으라고 말할 때까지 들판을 마음껏 뛰어
다닐 수 있었다.
We unzipped our bags and laid them down like picnic blankets on the grass in front of the giant movie screen in the
middle of the field.
침낭 지퍼를 열고, 들판 중앙의 거대한 영화 스크린 앞 잔디 위에 피크닉 매트처럼 펼쳤다.
Then we went to the row of food trucks parked at the edge of the field to load up on snacks and sodas and stuff like that.
그런 다음 들판 가장자리에 주차된 푸드트럭 줄로 가서 간식과 음료수 등을 챙겼다.
There were concession stands there, too, like at a farmers' market, selling roasted peanuts and cotton candy.
거기에는 농산물 시장처럼 간이 매점도 있어서, 구운 땅콩과 솜사탕을 팔았다.
And up a little farther was a short row of carnival-type stalls, the kind where you can win a stuffed animal if you throw a
baseball into a basket.
조금 더 올라가면 작은 놀이공원식 가판대가 있었는데, 공을 바구니에 넣으면 인형을 받을 수 있는 곳이었다.
Jack and I both tried—and failed—to win anything, but we heard Amos won a yellow hippo and gave it to Ximena.
잭과 나는 둘 다 시도했지만 아무것도 못 얻었다. 하지만 아모스가 노란 하마 인형을 얻어 시메나에게 줬다는 소문을 들었다.
That was the big gossip that went around: the jock and the brainiac.

From the food trucks, you could see the cornstalks in back of the movie screen.

They covered about a third of the entire field.

The rest of the field was completely surrounded by woods.
나머지 들판은 숲으로 완전히 둘러싸여 있었다.
As the sun sank lower in the sky, the tall trees at the entrance to the woods looked dark blue.
해가 하늘 아래로 내려가자, 숲 입구의 높은 나무들은 짙은 파란색으로 보였다.
By the time the other school buses pulled into the parking lots, we were back in our spots on the sleeping bags, right
smack in front of the screen: the best seats in the whole field.
다른 학교 버스들이 주차장에 들어올 때쯤, 우리는 다시 침낭 위 자리에 앉아 스크린 바로 앞에 있었다. 들판 전체에서 가장 좋은 자
리였다.
Everyone was passing around snacks and having a great time.
모두 간식을 돌려주며 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었다.
Me and Jack and Summer and Reid and Maya played Pictionary.
나와 잭, 서머, 리드, 마야는 피셔너리 게임을 했다.
We could hear the sounds of the other schools arriving, the loud laughing and talking of kids coming out on the field on
both sides of us, but we couldn't really see them.
다른 학교가 도착하는 소리, 들판 양쪽에서 나오는 아이들의 큰 웃음소리와 이야기 소리가 들렸지만, 우리는 그들을 잘 볼 수 없었다.
Though the sky was still light, the sun had gone down completely, and everything on the ground had turned deep purple.
하늘은 아직 밝았지만, 해는 완전히 졌고, 땅 위의 모든 것이 짙은 보라색으로 변했다.
The clouds were shadows now.
구름은 이제 그림자처럼 보였다.
We had trouble even seeing the Pictionary cards in front of us.

Just then, without any announcement, all the lights at the ends of the field went on at once.
바로 그때, 아무 안내도 없이, 들판 양끝의 조명이 한꺼번에 켜졌다.
They were like big bright stadium lights.
그것들은 거대한 밝은 경기장 조명 같았다.
I thought of that scene in Close Encounters when the alien ship lands and they're playing that music: duh-dah-doo-da
dunnn.
나는 영화 『미지와의 조우』에서 외계 우주선이 착륙하고 음악이 흐르는 장면이 떠올랐다. 둔-다-두-다 둔!
Everyone in the field started applauding and cheering like something great had just happened.
들판의 모든 사람들이 방금 대단한 일이 일어난 것처럼 박수를 치고 환호성을 질렀다.

An announcement came over the huge speakers next to the stadium lights:
경기장 조명 옆에 있는 거대한 스피커에서 안내 방송이 흘러나왔다.
"Welcome, everyone. Welcome to the twenty-third annual Big Movie Night at the Broarwood Nature Reserve. Welcome, teachers and students from . . . MS 342: the William Heath School. . . ."
“여러분 환영합니다. 브로어우드 자연 보호구역에서 열리는 제23회 빅 무비 나이트에 오신 것을 환영합니다. MS 342, 윌리엄 히스 학교의 선생님과 학생 여러분 환영합니다…”
A big cheer went up on the left side of the field.
들판 왼쪽에서 큰 환호성이 터져 나왔다.
"Welcome, teachers and students from Glover Academy. . . ."
“글로버 아카데미의 선생님과 학생 여러분 환영합니다…”
Another cheer went up, this time from the right side of the field.
이번에는 들판 오른쪽에서 또 다른 환호성이 터졌다.
"And welcome, teachers and students from . . . the Beecher Prep School!"
“그리고 비처 프렙 스쿨의 선생님과 학생 여러분 환영합니다!”
Our whole group cheered as loudly as we could.
우리 반 전체가 있는 힘껏 환호성을 질렀다.
"We're thrilled to have you as our guests here tonight, and thrilled that the weather is cooperating—in fact, can you
believe what a beautiful night this is?"
“오늘 밤 여러분을 손님으로 맞이하게 되어 기쁘고, 날씨가 도와주어 더욱 기쁩니다. 사실, 이렇게 아름다운 밤을 믿을 수 있나요?”
Again, everyone whooped and hollered.
다시 모두가 환호성을 질렀다.
"So as we prepare the movie, we do ask that you take a few moments to listen to this important announcement. The
Broarwood Nature Reserve, as you know, is dedicated to preserving our natural resources and the environment."

We ask that you leave no litter behind. Clean up after yourselves.

I immediately started clapping, even though I'd seen it a few times before, because it was Via's favorite movie of all time.
비아가 가장 좋아하는 영화라, 나는 이미 몇 번 봤음에도 바로 박수를 치기 시작했다.
But I was surprised that a whole bunch of kids (not from Beecher) booed and hissed and laughed.
하지만 비처 학생이 아닌 많은 아이들이 야유를 보내고 휘파람을 불며 웃는 것을 보고 놀랐다.
Someone from the right side of the field even threw a soda can at the screen, which seemed to surprise Mr. Tushman.
들판 오른쪽에서 누군가가 스크린에 탄산음료 캔을 던졌는데, 그 모습에 터쉬맨 선생님도 놀란 듯 보였다.
I saw him stand up and look in the direction of the can thrower, though I knew he couldn't see anything in the dark.
나는 그가 일어나 캔을 던진 방향을 보는 것을 보았지만, 어둠 속에서는 아무것도 볼 수 없다는 걸 알고 있었다.
The movie started playing right away. The stadium lights dimmed.
영화가 바로 상영되기 시작했고, 경기장 조명이 어두워졌다.
Maria the nun was standing at the top of the mountain twirling around and around.
수녀 마리아가 산 정상에 서서 빙글빙글 돌고 있었다.
It had gotten chilly all of a sudden, so I put on my yellow Montauk hoodie and adjusted the volume on my hearing aids
and leaned against my backpack and started watching.
갑자기 날씨가 쌀쌀해져, 나는 노란 몬토크 후드를 입고 보청기 볼륨을 조절한 뒤 배낭에 기대어 영화를 보기 시작했다.

Somewhere around the boring part where the guy named Rolf and the oldest daughter are singing You are sixteen, going on seventeen, Jack nudged me.
롤프라는 남자와 큰딸이 “You are sixteen, going on seventeen”을 부르는 지루한 부분쯤에서, 잭이 나를 팔꿈치로 쿡 찔렀다.
"Dude, I've got to pee," he said.
“야, 나 소변 봐야 해,” 그가 말했다.
We both got up and kind of hopscotched over the kids who were sitting or lying down on the sleeping bags.
우리는 둘 다 일어나 침낭 위에 앉아 있거나 누워 있는 아이들을 피해 건너 뛰듯이 이동했다.
Summer waved as we passed and I waved back.
우리가 지나가자 서머가 손을 흔들었고, 나도 손을 흔들며 답례했다.
There were lots of kids from the other schools walking around by the food trucks, playing the carnival games, or just
hanging out.
다른 학교에서 온 많은 아이들이 푸드트럭 근처를 돌아다니거나, 놀이공원 게임을 하거나, 그냥 어슬렁거리고 있었다.
Of course, there was a huge line for the toilets.
물론 화장실에는 긴 줄이 서 있었다.
"Forget this, I'll just find a tree," said Jack.
“이거 잊어버려, 그냥 나무 찾아서 볼래,” 잭이 말했다.
"That's gross, Jack. Let's just wait," I answered.
“그건 좀 징그럽다, 잭. 그냥 기다리자,” 내가 대답했다.
But he headed off to the row of trees at the edge of the field, which was past the orange cones that we were specifically
told not to go past.
하지만 그는 들판 가장자리의 나무 줄로 가버렸다. 그곳은 우리가 절대 넘어가면 안 된다고 안내받은 주황색 콘 너머였다.
And of course I followed him.
그리고 나는 당연히 그를 따라갔다.
And of course we didn't have our flashlights because we forgot to bring them.
그리고 우리는 당연히 손전등을 가져오지 않아 없었다.
It was so dark now we literally couldn't see ten steps ahead of us as we walked toward the woods.

Luckily, the movie gave off some light, so when we saw a flashlight coming toward us out of the woods, we knew
immediately that it was Henry, Miles, and Amos.
다행히 영화에서 약간의 빛이 나와, 숲에서 손전등이 우리 쪽으로 오자, 바로 헨리, 마일스, 아모스임을 알 수 있었다.
I guess they hadn't wanted to wait on line to use the toilets, either.

Miles and Henry were still not talking to Jack, but Amos had let go of the war a while ago.
마일스와 헨리는 여전히 잭과 말하지 않았지만, 아모스는 조금 전에 다툼을 끝낸 상태였다.
And he nodded hello to us as they passed by.

"Be careful of the bears!" shouted Henry, and he and Miles laughed as they walked away.

Amos shook his head at us like, Don't pay attention to them.

Jack and I walked a little farther until we were just inside the woods.
잭과 나는 조금 더 걸어 숲 안쪽에 들어섰다.
Then Jack hunted around for the perfect tree and finally did his business, though it felt like he was taking forever.
그다음 잭은 적당한 나무를 찾더니 마침내 일을 봤다. 하지만 정말 오래 걸리는 느낌이었다.
The woods were loud with strange sounds and chirps and croaks, like a wall of noise coming out of the trees.
숲은 이상한 소리와 짹짹거림, 개골개골 소리로 시끄러웠다. 마치 나무에서 쏟아져 나오는 소음의 벽 같았다.
Then we started hearing loud snaps not far from us, almost like cap gun pops, that definitely weren't insect noises.
그런 다음 우리 가까이에서 큰 탁 소리가 났다. 캡총 소리 같기도 했지만, 분명 곤충 소리는 아니었다.
And far away, like in another world, we could hear Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
멀리서, 다른 세상처럼, “장미 위의 빗방울”과 “아기 고양이의 수염”이 들렸다.
"Ah, that's much better," said Jack, zipping up.
“아, 훨씬 낫다,” 잭이 지퍼를 올리며 말했다.
"Now I have to pee," I said, which I did on the nearest tree.
“이제 나도 소변 봐야겠다,” 내가 말했고, 가장 가까운 나무에서 일을 봤다.
No way I was going farther in like Jack did.
잭처럼 더 깊숙이 들어갈 생각은 전혀 없었다.
"Do you smell that? Like firecrackers," he said, coming over to me.
“이거 냄새 맡아봐, 폭죽 냄새 같아,” 그가 내게 다가와 말했다.
"Oh yeah, that's what that is," I answered, zipping up.
“아, 맞아, 그게 그거구나,” 내가 지퍼를 올리며 대답했다.
"Weird."
“이상하다.”
"Let's go."
“가자.”

We headed back the way we came, in the direction of the giant screen.
우리는 왔던 길로 되돌아가 거대한 스크린 쪽으로 향했다.
That's when we walked straight into a group of kids we didn't know.
바로 그때, 우리는 알지 못하는 아이들 무리와 정면으로 마주쳤다.
They'd just come out of the woods, doing stuff I'm sure they didn't want their teachers to know about.
그들은 막 숲에서 나온 참이었고, 분명히 선생님들이 알기를 원하지 않을 만한 일을 하고 있었던 것 같았다.
I could smell the smoke now, the smell of both firecrackers and cigarettes.
이제 연기 냄새가 났다. 폭죽 냄새와 담배 냄새가 섞인 냄새였다.
They pointed a flashlight at us.
그들은 우리에게 손전등을 비췄다.
There were six of them: four boys and two girls.
그들은 여섯 명이었다. 남자아이 네 명과 여자아이 두 명이었다.
They looked like they were in the seventh grade.
그들은 7학년쯤 되어 보였다.
"What school are you from?" one of the boys called out.
“어디 학교야?” 남자아이 하나가 소리쳤다.
"Beecher Prep!" Jack started to answer, when all of a sudden one of the girls started screaming.
“비처 프렙!” 잭이 대답하려는 순간, 갑자기 여자아이 중 한 명이 비명을 질렀다.
"Oh my God!" she shrieked, holding her hand over her eyes like she was crying.
“세상에!” 그녀는 우는 것처럼 눈을 가리며 소리쳤다.
I figured maybe a huge bug had just flown into her face or something.
나는 아마 큰 벌레라도 얼굴로 날아든 줄 알았다.
"No way!" one of the boys cried out, and he started flicking his hand in the air like he'd just touched something hot.
“말도 안 돼!” 남자아이 하나가 소리치며, 뜨거운 걸 만진 것처럼 손을 휘저었다.
And then he covered his mouth.
그리고 그는 입을 막았다.
"No freakin' way, man! No freakin' way!"
“진짜 말도 안 돼, 야! 말도 안 돼!”
All of them started half laughing and half covering their eyes now, pushing each other and cursing loudly.
그들은 반쯤 웃고 반쯤 눈을 가리며 서로 밀치고 크게 욕을 하기 시작했다.
"What is that?" said the kid who was pointing the flashlight at us,
“저게 뭐야?” 하고 손전등을 비추고 있던 아이가 말했다.
and it was only then that I realized that the flashlight was pointed right at my face,
그제야 나는 그 손전등이 바로 내 얼굴을 향하고 있다는 걸 깨달았다.
and what they were talking about—screaming about—was me.
그리고 그들이 떠들고, 비명을 지르고 있던 대상이 바로 나라는 것도.
"Let's get out of here," Jack said to me quietly,
“여기서 나가자,” 잭이 조용히 내게 말했다.
and he pulled me by my sweatshirt sleeve and started walking away from them.
그리고 그는 내 후드티 소매를 잡아당기며 그들로부터 멀어지기 시작했다.
"Wait wait wait!" yelled the guy with the flashlight, cutting us off.
“잠깐 잠깐 잠깐!” 손전등을 든 아이가 소리치며 우리를 막아섰다.
He pointed the flashlight right in my face again,
그는 다시 손전등을 내 얼굴에 비췄다.
and now he was only about five feet away.

"Oh man! Oh man!!" he said, shaking his head, his mouth wide open.
“와, 이런! 이런!!” 그는 입을 벌린 채 고개를 흔들며 말했다.
"What happened to your face?"
“네 얼굴에 무슨 일이 있었던 거야?”
"Stop it, Eddie," said one of the girls.
“그만해, 에디,” 여자아이 중 한 명이 말했다.
"I didn't know we were watching Lord of the Rings tonight!" he said.
“오늘 밤에 반지의 제왕 보는 줄은 몰랐네!” 그가 말했다.
"Look, guys, it's Gollum!"
“봐, 얘들아, 골룸이야!”
This made his friends hysterical.
이 말에 그의 친구들은 완전히 난리가 났다.
Again we tried to walk away from them,
우리는 다시 그들로부터 벗어나려고 했다.
and again the kid named Eddie cut us off.
하지만 에디라는 아이가 또다시 길을 막았다.
He was at least a head taller than Jack,
그는 잭보다 최소한 머리 하나는 더 컸고,
who was about a head taller than me,
잭은 나보다 머리 하나쯤 더 컸으니,
so the guy looked huge to me.

"No man, it's Alien!" said one of the other kids.

"No, no, no, man. It's an orc!" laughed Eddie,
“아니, 아니야. 오크야!” 에디가 웃으며 말했다.
pointing the flashlight in my face again.
그는 다시 내 얼굴에 손전등을 비췄다.
This time he was right in front of us.
이번엔 바로 우리 앞에 서 있었다.
"Leave him alone, okay?" said Jack,
“그만 놔둬, 알았지?” 잭이 말했다.
pushing the hand holding the flashlight away.
그리고 손전등을 들고 있던 손을 밀쳐냈다.
"Make me," answered Eddie,
“그럼 해 보시지,” 에디가 대답했다.
pointing the flashlight in Jack's face now.
이번엔 잭의 얼굴에 손전등을 비췄다.
"What's your problem, dude?" said Jack.
“도대체 뭐가 문제야?” 잭이 말했다.
"Your boyfriend's my problem!"
“네 남자친구가 문제야!”
"Jack, let's just go," I said, pulling him by the arm.
“잭, 그냥 가자,” 나는 그의 팔을 잡아당기며 말했다.
"Oh man, it talks!" screamed Eddie,
“와, 얘 말도 하네!” 에디가 소리쳤다.
shining the flashlight in my face again.
그리고 다시 내 얼굴에 손전등을 비췄다.
Then one of the other guys threw a firecracker at our feet.
그때 다른 남자아이 하나가 우리 발밑으로 폭죽을 던졌다.
Jack tried to push past Eddie,
잭은 에디를 밀치고 지나가려 했지만,
but Eddie shoved his hands into Jack's shoulders and pushed him hard,
에디가 잭의 어깨를 세게 밀었고,
which made Jack fall backward.
그 바람에 잭은 뒤로 넘어졌다.
"Eddie!" screamed one of the girls.
“에디!” 여자아이 하나가 소리쳤다.
"Look," I said, stepping in front of Jack and holding my hands up in the air like a traffic cop.
“봐,” 나는 잭 앞에 서서 교통경찰처럼 두 손을 들며 말했다.
"We're a lot smaller than you guys . . ."
“우리는 너희보다 훨씬 작잖아…”
"Are you talking to me, Freddie Krueger?
“나한테 말하는 거야, 프레디 크루거?”
I don't think you want to mess with me, you ugly freak," said Eddie.
“나랑 엮이고 싶은 생각은 없을걸, 이 못생긴 괴물아,” 에디가 말했다.
And this was the point where I knew I should run away as fast as I could,
